School Psychology

School psychologists are instrumental to the success of Pennsylvania’s students, from early childhood through high school graduation. Considered experts in assessment, consultation, and intervention, school psychologists work closely with students, teachers, administrators, specialists, and families to create safe, positive, supportive, effective learning environments for all children through the use of evidence-based practices. School psychologists are trained to provide a continuum of comprehensive services.

Who Are School Psychologists and What Do They Do?

School psychologists are uniquely qualified members of school teams who support students' ability to learn and teachers' ability to teach. They apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. By collaborating with families, teachers, and administrators, school psychologists create safe, supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community.
In their work, school psychologists:

  • Improve student achievement through engagement, data analysis, evidence-based interventions/practices, and instructional consultation
  • Promote positive behavior and mental health by assessing needs, providing counseling, and coordinating school-based mental health services
  • Support diverse learners through culturally responsive services, appropriate Individualized Education Programs, and ongoing communication with families
  • Help create safe, positive school climates by implementing social-emotional learning, behavioral supports, and crisis intervention
  • Strengthen family-school partnerships by supporting families with their child's learning and mental health needs, connecting them with resources, and aiding transitions between school and community
  • Enhance school-wide assessment and accountability by analyzing data, identifying risk factors, and planning services at different levels.
