Inclusive Practices

Description:

Tier 2 Inclusive Practices provide targeted supports that help students access, participate in, and succeed within general education environments alongside their peers. Building upon inclusive Tier 1 practices, Tier 2 supports provide additional instruction, practice, feedback, structure, prompts, environmental supports, and adult or peer assistance for students who need more than universal supports alone.

Whenever appropriate, these supports are embedded within naturally occurring classroom routines and activities rather than requiring students to leave the general education environment. Teams use student strengths, preferences, data, and input from students, families, and educators to determine the type and intensity of support needed. Supports are monitored to determine whether students are gaining meaningful access, participating successfully, and experiencing improved academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and school-engagement outcomes.

Inclusive Tier 2 practices should supplement rather than replace Tier 1 supports and should be coordinated with individualized services, accommodations, modifications, and IEP requirements when applicable. The goal is to increase students' opportunities to learn, participate, belong, and experience success within the least restrictive and most supportive environment appropriate to their needs.
