FAMILIES TO THE MAX the Pennsylvania Statewide Family Network has a membership of over 600 families and professionals who work together to promote strengths-based perceptions about the abilities of children with diverse needs. What makes us stand out is that we are compelled by the conviction that equal opportunity means maximizing high expectations, academic access, and learning for all students.
Our federally funded statewide family network is striving to focus on an approach that joins, not divides, families and educators. This is rewarding work that requires dedicated individuals.
Coordination and support are provided by the Bureau of Special Education and F2MAX Parent Partner organizations; Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN), Parent Education and Advocacy Leadership Center (PEAL), and HUNE a Community Parent Resource Center.
The Parent Partners are representatives from federally funded organizations that assist FAMILIES TO THE MAX. These organizations support Pennsylvania families in helping their children achieve successful post-school outcomes.
The Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network – an organization that works with the Bureau of Special Education, Pennsylvania Department of Education, to provide professional development and technical assistance targeted to improving student results. PaTTAN also assists families in supporting their children through the education process and navigating the world of special education, providing many resources, trainings, and events to help parents learn about specific disabilities and educational initiatives.
Parent Education & Advocacy Leadership - Pennsylvania’s Parent Training and Information (PTI) center that works with families, youth and young adults with disabilities and special health care needs to help them understand their rights and advocate for themselves. The PEAL Center empowers families and individuals to be included in their home schools and access high quality, coordinated physical and behavioral healthcare. PEAL’s services are provided at no charge to families, as they are funded by private donations and federal, state, and private grants.
Hispanos Unidos para Niños Excepcionales – a Community Parent Resource Center (CPRC) organization that provides free bilingual English and Spanish training, technical assistance, and individual assistance to families and professionals who work with children and youth with disabilities. This assistance helps parents to participate more effectively with professionals in meeting the educational needs of children and youth (ages 0-26) with disabilities and improve educational outcomes.
This document explores how schools can reframe the IEP process and take active steps to include families as educational partners. When families are not just involved, but actively engaged, students achieve better grades, higher test scores, and increased graduation rates.
A family-friendly explanation of each section of the IEP is included, as well as considerations and conversation starters for use at the IEP team meeting.
