The PEARL is a portable reading camera that uses an array of natural-sounding voices to read printed material. It is designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The camera is used in combination with Freedom Scientific software, such as OpenBook or WYNN. Using the optical character recognition (OCR) features of this software, the user can press a keystroke on the PEARL to snap a picture and hear the text read back in one of the human-sounding voices. The user can control the reading rate and voice, tailor the appearance of the text on the screen (font style, size, character spacing, and foreground and background colors), use Masking and Word Spotlighting to follow text as it is read, and use split-screen view to compare documents. When the PEARL is in automatic mode, it senses motions, and snaps an image whenever the user turns a page. OpenBook is capable of identifying columns and places them in logical reading order. The user can change the language setting to read foreign language documents with native speaker voices. The PEARL runs off a single USB port, and does not require a power supply. It folds into a compact package for transport.
