The Bureau of Special Education's vision is to improve the instruction for all students including those with complex instructional needs. Project MAX was created to increase the capacity of Pennsylvania schools to provide all students, including those with complex instructional needs, with maximum access to and learning of the general education curriculum and the Pennsylvania Core Standards. This session will focus on the purpose of Project MAX, program structures, and benefits of the program. The presenters will share their teams' journey implementing Project MAX.

This webinar is designed to provide an overview of the procedures for administration of project-based assessment for students with disabilities and specific details regarding the development of the Individualized Education Program in the areas of student participation in assessment, accommodations, and specially designed instruction.

This presentation will provide an overview of quality physical education and offer insight on Adapted Physical Education (APE) as it pertains to the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). The presentation will identify the responsibilities of the adapted physical educator and present innovative ideas and instructional strategies to support students with disabilities in the physical education class. The session will also include examples of available resources.

This five part webinar series will cover the basic principles of providing effective instruction for students with High Functioning Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. The series will cover a range of topics including basic educational strategies and tactics for addressing the academic needs of students with High Functioning Autism and Asperger’s Disorder, social skills instruction, successful team work and instructional practices to promote effective inclusive practices, and methods of assuring fidelity of interventions for these students as well monitoring progress through measurement. - This segment of the five part webinar series will address the importance of evidence-based practice for serving students with high functioning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Descriptions of how the basic principles align with specific programming methods for this population will be provided. An emphasis on both instructional design and motivation will be provided.

Academic Instruction/Group Instruction/Direct Instruction: This segment of the five-part webinar series will address research-based instructional practices that increase the participation and success of students with autism during group instruction. Teacher-led academic instruction in inclusive classrooms will be featured.

This session of the five part series will address the following questions: What are social skills? Which ones are most important to teach? What instructional strategies are most effective for teaching social skills? How well-designed collaborative learning activities can pay 2-for-1 dividends by promoting both academic achievement and social skill development? The content will cover strategies such as class-wide peer tutoring and teaching students to recruit positive attention.

This segment of the webinar will address practices that promote the success of students with autism in general education classrooms. Specific practices will be described within five strategic approaches: a) teach self-monitoring/self-management skills, b) ensure success experiences, c) use group contingencies, d) collaborate with a focus on student outcomes, and e) increase parent involvement.
