De-Escalation

Description

Schools can support students with de-escalation by providing staff with training on recognizing early signs of distress and using strategies to calm and support students before situations escalate. Techniques such as active listening, offering choices, using a calm and neutral tone, and providing space for students to regain control can be effective. Creating a predictable and safe environment where students feel understood and supported helps prevent conflict. Additionally, individualized plans, such as Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSPs), can include specific de-escalation strategies tailored to the needs of students who may be prone to emotional outbursts, promoting a proactive approach to behavior management.
