This professional learning opportunity will focus on a number of key concepts. The connections between the science of reading and reading comprehension instruction will be explored. Using the Blueprint for comprehension as an instructional framework for developing necessary skills and knowledge for constructing meaning will be discussed. Multiple instructional examples including unit & lesson plans, activities and resources that support the development of vocabulary, sentence comprehension, text structure and background knowledge, inference and expression of understanding will be shared. The presenter will also reflect on current practices and identifying additional opportunities for informed instruction at varied grade levels for all students. This video provides and introduction to ECRI components, the research supporting its impact on student literacy outcomes, and a small group lesson demonstration.

A peer-mediated intervention for addressing those needs will be explicitly shared that focuses on partner reading and paragraph shrinking. A fidelity tool will be provided to guide instruction to scaffold implementation and outcome data will be shared demonstrating the positive effects of classwide reading intervention.

The Classwide Reading Intervention (Grades K-1): Implementation series covered how to implement phonlogical awareness, letter sound, and word-building classwide interventions that are based on research. In this video K-1 Grade Level Teams of Reading Teachers who participated in the series will present on the impact of their classwide reading intervention on student reading outcomes and classroom experiences. This session will extend topics introduced in Session 1 by providing case examples of how to use curriculum-based writing projects to develop language and literacy skills for all students. The emphasis will be placed on how to address problems across language levels for students with special needs, with examples of how to develop language skills and enhance lives.

This session will focus on the cognitive and language components necessary for successful reading and writing. It will also provide a comprehensive evaluative framework to assist school based teams to evaluate struggling readers. The session will provide steps to identify and select evaluative tools and how to use the data collected to craft instructional recommendations. Based on the ‘science’ of reading (reading research) this session will demonstrate how the team will review data gathered, review and analyze evidence based instructional programs and then match the child´s skill needs with the specific instructional components to craft a targeted and focused reading approach that meets the child´s specific strengths and needs.
