Schoology Online Course
Session Dates
Thursday October 10, 2024 - 12:01 AM - Schoology Online Course
Monday December 16, 2024 - 12:01 AM - Schoology Online Course
Closed
In this course, participants will better understand pairing general attack strategies alongside schema instruction to best help students approach, understand, and solve word problems. This course covers all of the additive schemas - total, difference, and change. In order to do this, participants will explore when word problems and problem solving best fit into math instruction by understanding the science of learning and the instructional hierarchy (IH). Participants will consider how they design learning experiences to ensure the correct instructional match for their students. They will also address five common challenges students face specific to word problems. New knowledge acquisition, resources provided, and checks for understanding will allow participants to put practices in place after completing the course.
Objectives
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe best practice for teaching mathematics word problems to students.
- Identify and address common barriers teachers and students face when solving word problems.
- Describe general attack strategies and schema- based instruction to support students in solving mathematics word problems.
