4B: Guiding AAC Growth: A Stepwise Plan for Student Communication

Speakers: Stephanie Ekis and Vicki Clarke

Session Description:
This session will highlight a clear, practical process for choosing and teaching meaningful AAC targets across classroom and therapy settings. Participants will learn how to identify vocabulary that reflects a student’s real communication needs by drawing on observation, partner input, and developmental language guidelines. They will explore ways to blend explicit instruction with natural, embedded opportunities so AAC learning feels purposeful and connected to daily routines. Using video examples and intuitive planning worksheets, participants will leave the session with a toolbox of resources that will support language learning, engagement, and authentic participation in the classroom.

Objectives:
  • Identify three strategies professionals can use to select meaningful AAC vocabulary targets based on student observation, input, and developmental guidelines.
  • Describe two ways to provide explicit and embedded instruction when teaching communication targets using AAC.
  • Demonstrate one method for modeling AAC use during a classroom routine that aligns with augmented input strategies.
