Description:
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)/Mental Fitness empowers schools to move beyond crisis response to a proactive model that supports the mental health of all students. By teaching early identification, destigmatizing mental health challenges, and fostering a culture of wellness, schools can strengthen student engagement, improve academic outcomes, and create safer, more supportive learning environments.
At PaTTAN, we are committed to advancing both prevention and intervention in student mental health. Through Youth Mental Health First Aid and the promotion of Mental Fitness, we help educators and school personnel build confidence in supporting students’ emotional well-being—equipping them to respond to challenges and foster positive mental health for every learner.

Critical Features:
- Early Identification: YMHFA trains staff to recognize early warning signs and risk factors for mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use.
- Action Plan (ALGEE): The YMHFA framework teaches a 5-step action plan: Approach, Listen, Give support, Encourage professional help, and Encourage self-help strategies.
- Practical, Skills-Based Training: Training includes role-playing, case examples, and interactive modules to build real-world confidence in responding to youth in distress.
- Mental Fitness Promotion: Focus on daily mental wellness strategies such as mindfulness, positive self-talk, goal setting, and emotional regulation.
- Stigma Reduction: Encourages open dialogue about mental health to foster empathy, reduce shame, and promote help-seeking behaviors.
- School-Wide Alignment: Integrates with existing systems such as MTSS, SEL initiatives, and trauma-informed practices for a cohesive approach to mental wellness.
- Culturally Responsive Practices: Emphasizes the importance of understanding mental health through the lens of students’ cultural, linguistic, and social backgrounds.
Implementation Tips:
- Provide YMHFA training to a wide range of staff—teachers, counselors, coaches, paraprofessionals, and administrators.
- Embed mental fitness routines into the school day (e.g., morning check-ins, brain breaks, mindfulness activities).
- Create school-wide messaging that normalizes conversations about mental health and encourages students to seek support.
- Partner with families and community mental health providers to ensure continuity of care and reinforce skills at home.
- Incorporate student voice in mental health initiatives through peer-led programs, clubs, or wellness councils.
- Monitor outcomes through climate surveys, student feedback, and data on behavior, attendance, and engagement.
- Sustain efforts through ongoing professional learning, coaching, and integration with broader school improvement plans.
