Bookshare: Lifelong Learning - Day 2

This three-part webinar will provide participants with information about decision-making tools that assist teams in the assessment process as well as the benefits of audio-supported reading in the context of “listening to learn,” and how Bookshare membership can provide lifelong learning opportunities. Specifically, participants will learn about the AEM Navigator and AEM Explorer, Protocol for Accommodations in Reading (PAR), the SETT Framework, and PA’s Guidelines for the Provision of Accessible Instructional Materials as decision-making tools. Participants will also learn how students can utilize audio-assisted reading to access curricular content and gain needed information using Bookshare books. During the third session, participants will learn about the importance of effective transition planning and how Bookshare membership can benefit students as they leave secondary school and move on to higher education, employment, and independent living.

In this presentation we will first briefly review the symptomatic presentation of youth with prolonged recovery and identify the demographic, injury-related, and symptomatic risk factors for prolonged recovery. The correlates and sequelae of prolonged recovery will also be reviewed, such as depression, anxiety, attentional and concentration difficulties, sleep problems, headache, and suicidal ideation and behavior. Next, we will describe a current best practice for management of prolonged recovery, deciding which set of symptoms and impairments to target first, and psychosocial and pharmacological approaches to management of prolonged recovery. Finally, we will suggest approaches to parent education, school and athletic management, and screening for behavioral health issues that may prevent development of prolonged recovery and will lead to earlier identification of youth at risk for prolonged recovery.
