The brief report features data PATTAN Autism Initiative consultants were asked to present at the Association for Behavior Analysis International Second Education Conference held in Chicago, Illinois in November of 2013. It includes a summary of PATTAN’s Autism Initiative Applied Behavior Analysis supports. The efforts described are evidence based and reflect outcomes of a team effort that includes many collaborators including school districts, Intermediate Units, Approved Private Schools, PATTAN and the Bureau of Special Education for the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Intensive behavior analytic intervention for young children diagnosed with autism can produce large gains in social, cognitive, and language development. One critical area to address is repetitive behavior such as stereotypy. Applied research on evaluating and treating stereotypic behavior will be reviewed, focusing on effective interventions for building core adaptive living and social skills, in addition to procedures for treating stereotypic behavior directly. Response Interruption and Redirection (RIRD) research for treating stereotypy has shown that many variations of this procedure can be effective even with individuals with limited vocal, verbal skills. Variations of the procedure and when they are most appropriate will be discussed, along with videos depicting the procedure. This presentation will also describe repetitive behavior associated with anxiety and how to treat it.

This segment provides an overview of assessment strategies for critical precursor skills necessary for introducing a formal tact of parts and features program as well assessment procedures for identifying existing skills a child may demonstrate related to tacting parts and features.

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is acknowledged as a best practice approach to providing educational and clinical services to children with autism spectrum disorders; however, ABA consists of individually tailoring interventions to meet the educational and clinical goals of each child and diagnosis is not particularly pertinent. This address will discuss systematic evaluations of clinical and teaching procedures conducted with persons with autism for building independent living skills and treating problem behavior.

An outline of error correction procedures to be used when teaching tacts of parts and features are presented. Typical error patterns are discussed and specific error correction strategies related to error patterns are presented.

This presentation will cover neurodiversity’s definition, challenges, and opportunities, as well as the role the Office for Vocational Rehabilitation plays in Secondary Transition, Early Reach, and Pre-Employment Training. Presenters will engage participants in sharing the specifics of the new Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. Information regarding how to access resources and understand Pre-Employment Transition Services will also be discussed.
