This training addresses the needs of students with autism who present with emerging (early learner) skill sets, including but not limited to the following: social interaction, cooperation with instruction, requesting (mand), listener and imitation skills. Participants will review and learn important considerations for use of reinforcement, assessment, programming, material organization, instructional procedures and systems for monitoring progress when establishing initial skill sets. Programs reviewed in this training will include: cooperation, social/play-based routines, mand training, intensive teaching, and activities of daily living. The content will provide relevant strategies for emergent social, speaker and listener skills across intensive and naturalistic teaching environments within individual and group teaching sessions.

Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and deliver behavioral protocols to establish cooperation skills
  • Identify student reinforcers and complete language-based assessments for early learner profile
  • Conduct play-based social routines and mand training sessions with learners across various response forms
  • Deliver instructional protocols for object-based instruction and basic intensive teaching programs
  • Review considerations regarding early learner materials organization
    Implement assessment and data procedures to guide decision making on early learner programming
