Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)

What is You Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)?:
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is an evidence-based training program designed to equip educators, school staff, and community members with the knowledge and skills to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health challenges in young people. This training empowers participants to provide initial support and connect youth to appropriate resources.

Why is it important?
  • At PaTTAN, we are committed to fostering safe and supportive learning environments. Through YMHFA, we help educators and school personnel build confidence in addressing mental health concerns, reducing stigma, and promoting student well-being. Join us in making a difference—because every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive.
Critical Features:
Evidence-Based Curriculum: Grounded in research and best practices in adolescent mental health.

Action-Oriented Framework: Teaches the 5-step ALGEE action plan to guide safe, effective responses to youth in distress.

Focus on Early Intervention: Helps adults recognize warning signs and risk factors before a crisis escalates.

Culturally Responsive Content: Considers the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students.

Interactive, Practical Learning: Includes real-life scenarios, role-plays, and discussion to reinforce learning.

Certification: Participants receive a nationally recognized certificate valid for 3 years.
Implementation Tips:
  • Start with Leadership: Train administrators and key staff first to model commitment and support schoolwide adoption.
  • Build into Professional Development: Integrate YMHFA into in-service days or staff training calendars.
  • Form a Mental Health Response Team: Identify and train a core group of staff to act as mental health ambassadors in your building.
  • Pair with Tier I Supports: Align YMHFA with your existing PBIS or MTSS framework to enhance schoolwide mental wellness efforts.
  • Engage Families and Communities: Extend the training opportunity to parents, caregivers, and local youth-serving organizations.
  • Follow Up: Encourage reflection and refresher conversations after training to keep the strategies active and relevant.
